Procedure
During liposuction, small, thin, blunt-tipped tubes (cannula) are inserted through tiny cuts in the skin. Fat is suctioned out through these tubes as the doctor moves the tubes around under the skin to target specific fat deposits.
The may forms of techniques  include:
  • Tumescent liposuction
  • Ultrasound-assisted liposuction
  • Laser-assisted liposuction
Liposuction is usually done as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia. Sometimes it may require general anaesthesia with overnight stay as when large areas are treatedpatients can return to their normal activities usually hours after but sometimes it may require days of rest.  Liposuction is typically used on "problem" areas that are resistant to diet & lifestyle changes and  is done not to reduce body weight.the best candidates for liposuction are healthy people who are at or close to a healthy weight but who have stubborn fat deposits that do not respond to exercise. It is not a substitute for diet and exercise.Liposuction is sometimes used in combination with other cosmetic surgery procedures, such as a "tummy tuck" (abdominoplasty), breast reduction, or face-lift.

Other uses
Liposuction may also be used to treat certain medical conditions, including:

  • Benign fatty tumors (lipomas)
  • Abnormal enlargement of the male breasts (gynecomastia or pseudogynecomastia)
  • Problems with metabolism of fat in the body (lipodystrophy)
  • Excessive sweating in the armpit area (axillary hyperhidrosis)
ResultsLiposuction is not used to treat obesity. It will not get rid of cellulite or stretch marks.
The maximum amount of fat that can be removed safely is probably about 6 to 8 pounds (3 to 4 liters). Most patients will see 90% of their ultimate liposuction results with in one to three months after surgeryLiposuction generally does not tighten the skin over the treated area.  It may take up to 6 months for the skin to tighten around the treated area.
As your body ages, it is natural to lose some firmness, but most of your improvement should be relatively permanent. In some situations, it may not be possible to achieve optimal results with a single surgical procedure and another surgery may be necessary. Also If the patient gains a significant amount of weight, then fat can return to an area previously treated by liposuction.
